Du er du og du duer » answer
by charmelb, 2016-09-22, 09:18  Spam?  90.191.95....
Hello! I would like to understand this sentence from the children's song "Du er du og du duer". Mainly the word "Duer". What does it mean?

"du" as a verb is something that works or what anyone is good for. So here it could be translated to: You are you and you work/you are good. A cute little wordplay on "du" as pronoun and "du" as verb.

Man vil hinanden - translation please  » answer
by DrDwarf, 2016-09-03, 00:48  Spam?  95.147.206...
I am trying to help a friend with a book translation into English from Danish via Another language, but I think that her translation of this phrase is not quite right. She has 'we intend each other' but this doesn't make sense. I believe it to be 'we want each other' (literally) but assume that it has a more complex meaning? Any help in understanding what Man vil hinanden means would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

From this I would say you are right, though it doesn't necessarily have to have sexual meaning. It is more "we want each other", in the sense you want to get in a relationship with someone and the feeling is returned, or to be in a relationship, where you both work for the relationship to last.

I hope my answer helps you to get a better understanding of the expression.

Information about a change in the guidelines regarding delete votes » answer
by Paul (AT), 2016-06-27, 17:50  Spam?
The basic rule in GL 3 is "Always confirm the first correct posting!". So far, when there was no completely correct posting, and someone voted for a deletion, this delete vote was the first correct posting, so it had to be confirmed. However, most of the contributors understood this differently or didn't want to comply with it, for reasons I understand. In the last months this rule was challenged several times, which caused a lot of discussions. In the end I came to the conclusion that the vast majority of the community wants less strict delete rules. After discussing some text suggestions (forum: #846903), the following rule was accepted and is now effective:

+Always confirm the first correct posting! [...]
A [del] vote is considered a correct posting if no previous posting (input, vote or comment) contained...

skubbe du » answer
by Wiffle, 2015-12-14, 03:22  Spam?  31.51.255...
In a TV program I was watching a boy suggests to a girl that they had arranged to meet.
She disagrees..... in the subtitles she says 'were we?'  but she actually says what i'm guessing is 'skubbe du'
Would this be like 'push off' as used colloquially in English i.e. don't be ridiculous.
Or am I miles off ??

Would really appreciate any help.

I've been thinking about it, and I can't get it quite right with what has been said in Danish. Maybe something like "skrub af"? Or something with "skulle". What TV program was it? Maybe that would help.

Ok it was series 1 episode 9 of The Bridge ..... but it is a Copenhagen scene (so presumably it would have been in Danish).....   a teen boy thinks he has been talking online to an old school girlfriend (he has actually been talking to criminal posing as her), then by chance he bumps into her in person and says 'Hey, we were supposed to meet later.'  she has no idea what he is speaking  about and says the "Skubbe Du" thing..... the translator has her reply as 'Were we?'  but I can't find anything in a Danish dictionary that seems likely, phonetically i thought the skubbe looked right.....but skulle is could?..... so maybe she said something like "should you?"..... i will have to look at it again and see exactly what he says to see if that fits.  I will report back when I have checked, thanks for your help so far. ;)  I liked 'The Killing' better but am hooked on Scandinoir.

Prisliste drift kunder » answer

From a price list for file server an database management services

Der henvises til gældende ”Prisliste drift kunder”

I have: With reference to applicable "Price list management customers"

The price list is for file server management, not for price list management.

Would it mean something more like "Pricelist PER management customer"?

Tattoo I have please help » answer
by spacecadet1989, 2015-04-16, 03:45  Spam?  24.68.192....
I have a tattoo that I got in Danish that I had my Danish grandfather translate for me he hasn't spoken Danish much in the last 30 years so he may have missed translated it I don't really care tremendously if it's mistranslated because the whole point was just to have him do it But I am curious though how close it is the phrase is written in Danish on my arm but it is supposed to mean "if life seems under control you're not going fast enough"

It says "hvis livet synes under kontrol, du ikke ga hurting noch.
(I may have messed the spelling up on a letter or two) and the a in ga has a circle above it.
Thanks!!

The first part "hvis livet synes under kontrol" is a good translation, and it sounds poetic.
The second part has the same meaning as in English, and the spelling would be: "du ikke gå hurtigt nok". The English word order seems to have influenced the translation, because in the Danish of today you would say "går du ikke hurtigt nok".

So the meaning is the same, and it's a sweet story.

Hygge/hyggelig » answer
by gabs81, 2015-01-25, 02:55  Spam?  89.71.232....
It's about the word hygge/hyggelig which seems like a pretty unique concept in Danish language.

If you can, please tell me in what situation on your daily basis would you say that something is hyggelig? What things/objects/situations/people/places/other concepts may be considered hyggelig? If you think about hygge as a noun and hyggelig as an adjective, what do you normally picture/see in your eyes?

How do English translations of this word ("cozy, warm, nice, pleasant") correspond to its real Danish nature? Are they pretty accurate or does it depend on situation/on what is described as hyggelig? Are there any nice synonyms in Danish or maybe even in English that you think are nicely corresponding? Do you think hygge is connected with your culture/country in some way?

Could you say what is definitely or what is rather NOT hygge(lig)? With what objects/situations would you not use this word (when it feels awkward, unsuitable, pointless)?

Would you be able to make up several sentences with both hygge and hyggelig (with English translation, if possible) so that they show different usage of the concept itself?

Thank you in advance.

Stop! You cannot do this! » answer
by lukeadamson (UN), 2014-06-02, 00:13  Spam?
I am writing a novel and have a race of people who I wish to speak danish, for a range of reasons I won't go into on here.

They only appear once in the first novel (its intended as a series) and so I only need three things translated.

1) Stop!/No! - as an imperative. Either will suit my needs.
2) You cannot do this! - as an imperative but used as a plea.
3) Bastards! - Doesn't have to be bastards as I imagine the direct translation will be for someone born to unwed parents. Do not want this meaning - more like some form of mild insult for someone without honour - like the modern meaning for the English word bastard.

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

Hello Lukeadamson, I'll give it a try.

1) Stop!/Nej!
2) Du må ikke gøre det!
3) Skiderikker!
